Kingswells Extension
Creating an open plan space is an important aspect of any family home, with defined zones for the Kitchen, Dining and Family areas improving the enjoyment of the space and how it can be used. Maximising daylight and creating access to the garden can also have a positive impact on the home.
This modern extension provides this relatively new build home with a large open plan space, with large bi-fold doors opening out to a new decked terrace and landscaped garden. The extension combines the original Kitchen and Dining Room, doubling the footprint of the existing space.
Materials were chosen to contrast with the existing house, with dark timber and brick cladding complimenting the new dark grey windows and doors.
The design was kept simple, with clean lines, hidden gutters and rectangular shape extending across the width of the original house.
Issues with existing house
- Restricted width and space of existing Kitchen.
- Separate Kitchen and Dining Room.
- Dining space too small to be a functional Dining room.
- Small window and door openings, with limited connection to Garden.
- Lack of Family space.
- Formed ground floor extension across the width of the house, creating large open plan Kitchen/Dining/Family space.
- Installed large Bi-fold door opening, allowing the internal space to be opened up to the Garden.
- Installed large windows and rooflights to maximise natural daylight.
- Fitted new Kitchen, built in Booth Seating and Wood burner.
- Formed new decked area to connect the extension with the garden.
