Extending a Period Home

Work is well underway to extend and alter this period home in the West End of Aberdeen. With the timber kit and roof structure formed, it offers a glimpse of the amazing spaces which are to be created.

Desswood Extension

One of the common issues Architects have to solve is how to extend a period home.

Many period homes in Aberdeen have the beautifully proportioned formal rooms, to the front, but are often let down by small Kitchens which are generally located to the rear and separate from the main Living areas and Dining areas.

One solution is to extend the footprint to create more internal space to the rear of the property. Extending, and removing internal walls, can create the dream open plan Kitchen/Dining/Family space which suits the modern way of living.

Having defined Kitchen, Dining and Family spaces allows the house to be used to its maximum potential. A well laid out kitchen can provide all the storage and worktop space you require, with an island providing a focal point, which can provide that relaxed seating and entertaining area we all enjoy.

Improving access to the garden and adding in lots of natural daylight are also great ways of improving the way we live and the sense of enjoyment we can achieve from of our homes.
